Friends called for help, however, before passersby could rush into the river, the two boys had disappeared from view, said the police
Two teenagers drowned in the Phalguni (also known as Gurupura river) near Thota Bengre after they were swept by the currents while having a bath there on Saturday.
Mohammad Marsook (13), a Class VIII student of Government High School, Bengre, and Hassan Nameer (14), a Class IX student of Badriya School nearby, went to the river to play along with four other boys, when the currents separated them from the group around 11.15 a.m. His friends called for help, however, before passersby could rush into the river, the two boys had disappeared from view, said the police. The bodies were found an hour later around 1 p.m. by divers of the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services.
The Panambur police, who registered the case, said the spot was known to have strong undercurrents as District Administration had been dredging there. Both the boys were residents of Nerekere in Bengre.
The body of a 60-year-old man identified as Suresh Kumar was found in a storm water drain in Yekkur on Saturday morning. The police believe cognitive impairment due to sleeping pills to be the reason for the fall.
Kumar, who worked in a stall in Suchitra theatre in the city, was reported missing according to a complaint filed by his wife with the Bunder Police station on Friday. Though he had left work on the night of October 10, he had not returned to his house in Gorigudda. On Saturday, his body was found floating in the drain around 10 a.m. by a cattle herder.
