Governor H.R. Bhardwaj said on Wednesday that modern trauma care facilities should be made available to the poor.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Trauma and Emergency Centre of Kasturba Hospital here.
Mr. Bhardwaj said that with the Government giving importance to construction of big highways, there was also a need for setting up trauma care centres with state-of-the-art facilities near them.
If immediate trauma care was given to patients, the chances of their survival and recovery would increase, he said.
Insurance
It was also necessary to device a system to provide trauma care facilities to the poor. This could be done if insurance was linked to healthcare, he said.
The Government should provide health insurance coverage to the poor so that they too could have access to good healthcare facilities, he added.
Universities, including Manipal University, should set up hospitals in smaller cities so that people living there could have access to modern healthcare facilities.
Medicine was a noble profession, the Governor said, and added that it was incumbent on the part of doctors to live up to its noble goal.
Pro-chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal welcomed the gathering. Home Minister V.S. Acharya, Chancellor Ramdas M. Pai, vice-chancellor R.P. Warrier, dean of Kasturba Medical College Sripathi Rao, wife of Mr. Bhardwaj, Prafulata Bhardwaj, were present on the occasion.
