Mayor Mahabala Marla on Wednesday said that the Mangaluru City Corporation would soon erect direction boards and other traffic guidance equipment in the city for the convenience of motorists.

Speaking at the valedictory of the 26th National Road Safety Week celebrations here, Mr. Marla said that the corporation is in constant touch with the enforcement authorities for smooth and unhindered traffic movement.

The Mayor also said that the corporation would soon be getting a tow vehicle to help the traffic police remove vehicles parked at unauthorised places.

He said that for better road safety, people should not only be aware of the rules but also follow them. Speaking on the occasion, Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D said that the department had identified accident-prone spots and has done accident mapping.

The necessary guidance systems are also being installed at such places and he urged urban local bodies to provide funds for traffic infrastructure in cities and towns.

Regional Transport Officer Afzal Ahmed Khan said that the week-long celebrations, which included awareness programmes in schools, a bike rally, a cartoon exhibition, drawing competition for students and workshop for the bus crew, were able to enhance traffic awareness among people.

On the occasion, prizes were distributed to drawing competition winners.
