Chief Planning Officer of Udupi Zilla Panchayat Vijaykumar Shetty said here on Tuesday that awareness should be created about sanitation and cleanliness in rural areas.
He was speaking at a seminar on “sanitation and cleanliness” organised by the Department of Information, Volakadu Government Composite High School and Rotary Club.
Mr. Shetty said the Government had built toilets near the houses in many villages in the State. But it had been found that at many places these toilets were used to store firewood.
“It is necessary to inform the people in rural areas about the health problems which might occur because of lack of cleanliness and sanitation,” he said.
This could change only if awareness was created among schoolchildren in rural areas. Priority should be for solid waste management. This could be done by segregating plastic and non-plastic waste as the first step, said Mr. Shetty.
