For a young family, who arrived at Colaco Hospital for the delivery of the second child, their joy turned to inconsolable grief in seconds.

The family and relatives of Sheikh Muktar, a resident of Adyar, were waiting in the corridor of the second floor of the hospital when his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Sheikh Marwa, climbed the parapet, fell down through an open window. “It all happened within a few seconds taking the relative unaware,” an eyewitness said.

Sheikh Marwa had come with the relatives to the hospital to see the new member of her family born on Thursday night.

The Mangalore East Police said the parapet was two-feet high. The child was immediately taken to Kasturba Medical Hospital near Jyothi Circle where she was kept for a while in the intensive care unit. The child succumbed to injuries around 9 p.m.

The police said they were yet to record statements of Mr. Muktar and his relatives, who are still in a state of shock. No complaint has been filed so far, the police said.

This is the second incident of a person dying after a fall from a hospital building. On May 5, 2012, a 30-year-old labourer from Bagalkot jumped to death from the seventh floor of a private hospital.
