Three persons arrested for murder of two Keralites

July 08, 2014 12:35 pm | Updated 12:35 pm IST - Mangalore/Kasaragod:Mangalore:

The Mangalore police have arrested three persons allegedly involved in the murder of two people from Kerala, including a person allegedly involved in gold smuggling, in an apartment in Mangalore.

Mangalore Police Commissioner R. Hithendra said the city’s Central Crime Branch officers stopped a suspicious vehicle a few days ago. The vehicle also had blood stains in it. On inquiry three persons in the vehicle reportedly admitted to murdering Nafir and Fahim, both around 20 years old, in an apartment in Mangalore’s Attavar area on July 1.

Mr. Hithendra gave the names of the arrested as Mohammed Mahajir Sanaf from Cherkala in Kasaragod, Mohammed Irshad and Mohammed Saffan from Anangur in Tamil Nadu. The arrested persons were friends of Nafir and Fahim.

Mr. Hithendra told reporters that Nafir, a resident of Thalassery, had reportedly smuggled into the Bangalore International Airport in November 2013 about 3kg of gold. Nafir reportedly did not hand over the smuggled gold to persons supposed to receive it, but instead joined Fahim, a resident of Kuttichira in Kozhikode, and the three arrested persons, who together sold 2.5 kg of the smuggled gold. All five stayed in an apartment in Attavar since June.

Mr. Hithendra said the persons who were to get the smuggled gold, reportedly started searching for Nafir. Nafir reportedly got a hint of this and had arguments with the arrested persons over the sale of gold. The arrested persons allegedly murdered Nafir and Fahim on July 1 in the apartment as they did not want the secret about the gold being sold to be revealed. They carried the bodies in a sports utility vehicle and buried them in a small piece of land they had purchased in Maruthadukkam near Kundamkuzhi in Kasaragod district.

Mr. Hithendra said the police were looking for clues leading to involvement of more persons in the murder. The police were questioning the person to whom the gold was sold and also the person who had rented his apartment to the arrested persons. The police were not ruling out the possibility of a supari killing, he said.

Our Kasaragod Staff Reporter adds:

Kasaragod Superintendent of Police Thomson Jose told The Hindu that the bodies of Nafir and Fahim were extricated from the pit under a rainwater harvesting sump on the land in Maruthadukkam around 3 p.m. on Monday.

Mangalore: Police Commissioner R. Hithendra has cautioned people against giving houses on rent without getting details about the tenant.

Mr. Hithendra said giving houses on rent to strangers would be a threat to national security. Owners need to be cautious and gather as many details about the tenant before letting out the house.

He said the apartment in which two people from Kerala were murdered was let out for a short period of one month.
