This sand is not from the river

Artificial sand and wood, curing compounds, self-compacting concrete, pre-cast products and waterproof coating material are some of the items on display at an exhibition organised by the State Government's Task Force for Quality Assurance in Public Constructions here.

The exhibition at T.V. Ramana Pai Convention Centre at Navbharat Circle will end on Friday.

The exhibition is part of a two-day workshop on quality construction in public works, which began here on Thursday. Artificial sand is obtained from specific natural granite, said an executive of Robo Silicon Pvt. Ltd., which has displayed its brand RoboSand at the exhibition.

This sand could be an alternative to river sand in the construction industry since grading and quality of this product was consistent. This lent the concrete higher compressive strength that could bear greater loads, said the executive.

The company's executive claimed that the river sand was sourced from different places and hence the compressive strength of the concrete could also vary. Manufactured sand was being produced from a particular quarry, after carrying out rock test.

R. Sridhar Rao, General Manager (Technical), Silicon Valley Waterproofing Company, said that waterproof coating material could be applied on plastic, wood, metal and concrete. It could be used to repair cracks on GI sheets and it had multiple applications. When applied on concrete roofs, it would serve to maintain coolness inside the building. An executive of Hightek Ecowood said that the artificial woodwas chemical-proof, weather-proof, termite-proof and even fire-proof.
