Students in many schools of the city competed among one another to present flowers and wish their favourite teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Saturday.
“Why hasn’t she come yet,” Shipali, a class seven student of Canara School, Urwa, told her friend Pratiksha, waiting at the school gate for their English teacher Suhasini.
“We will go to her house and wish her if she doesn’t come to school,” said Pratiksha. “We want to be the first to greet her.”
When “Suhasini miss” arrived in an autorickshaw after some time, dozens of students carrying flowers surrounded her. The children would not let her pay the autorickshaw fare until they wished her. However, after she told them to wait for a while, the children obeyed. A minute later, the teacher was all smiles and had a bunch of flowers in her hands.
When asked why do the children like her so much? She said, “It’s because I like them.”
‘Full of fun’
Many students of the Lourdes Central School chose to be diplomatic and said they liked all their teachers. However, Karthik Bhat, a class 10 student, said he liked the way the vice-principal of the school, Joy Rai, teaches. “Her classes are full of fun. And, she also enjoys teaching us,” he said.
For students of St. Aloysius High School at Lady Hill Circle, the favourite is their science teacher Ravishankar N.K. They like they way he makes them understand complex concepts easily. Once he took them to the Thumbe dam on the outskirts of the city to show them how drinking water is purified and supplied to Mangalore, they recalled.
Class 10 students of the school had organised several games on the occasion to “test the skills” of their teachers.
The students performed a Michael Jackson number on the occasion. Parents of the children hosted the programme.
Savitri Ramesh Bhat, who teaches Kannada in the Kannada-medium Pompeii School at Lady Hill Circle, said she derived pleasure from teaching underprivileged children.
Girish U.G., a biology teacher in the school, said it was important for teachers to assess the ability of students and hone their skills.
