The Kavoor police have arrested a taxi driver after a Mumbai-based woman filed a complaint accusing him of assaulting her.

According to the police, the woman came to Mangaluru on March 9 and visited some of temples. Winding up her tour on March 11, she hired a taxi from the city to the Manglauru International Airport.

According to the complainant, the driver Dayanand, a resident of Belthangady, was speaking on the phone while driving. She objected and asked him to keep away the phone. He did so and reportedly started to drive rashly.

She asked the driver to stop the vehicle a few metres from Kenjar junction. Dayanand stopped the car and allegedly slapped the woman before leaving the place. On receiving information about the assault, the Kavoor police went to the airport and recorded the woman’s complaint. She left by a flight to Mumbai.

The driver was arrested on Monday for offences under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 354 (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with an intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.
