April 27, 2017 01:00 am | Updated 01:00 am IST - Udupi

Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis on Wednesday directed the officials of the urban local bodies, and departments of industry and environment to take effective steps to implement the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2016.

Chairing a meeting at the District Offices Complex, Ms. Francis said that there should be proper checking at the check posts so that plastic from other places was not imported into the district. There should be surprise checking of big shops for preventing the use of plastic, she said.

The Udupi municipality should hold an awareness meeting with those traders still using plastic. If this measure fails, then legal action should be taken, she said. Cloth bags should be given instead of plastic bags at places of worship. The use of plastic should be banned during trekking trips to Kodachadri hills, Ms. Francis added.
