The members of Udupi district unit of Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike staged a dharna in front of the District Police Office here on Thursday demanding immediate arrest of those who allegedly assaulted three men who were transporting a cow and a calf at Kanajar village under Hiriyadka police station limits last week.
K.M. Umarabba, Ibrahim, and Ranjit had purchased the cow and calf from Jagadish Shetty of Kanajar for Rs. 3,000. The three were attacked by about 20 activists allegedly linked to an organisation, affiliated to the Sangh Parivar.
Instead of being sympathetic to the poor cattle trader and his two assistants, the Hiriyadka police were planning to slap a case against Mr. Ibrahim for not having taken permission from the police, veterinary and regional transport departments, to transport the cow and a calf. The police stations and the representatives of the ruling government in the coastal region were biased. It was surprising that the Opposition Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) had not come in support of the three victims. Both the Opposition parties were in a state of slumber, he said. Vedike's district unit vice-president K. Phaniraj and Dalit Sangharsha Samiti district unit convenor Jayan Malpe also spoke.
