Support system needed for victims: judge

October 22, 2014 11:36 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:39 pm IST - MANGALORE:

A support system needs to be developed to implement the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, said the Second Additional District and Sessions Judge C.M. Joshi.

Inaugurating an awareness programme on the Act here on Tuesday, Mr. Joshi said the State government, civic society representatives and judicial officers should come together to develop the system. Renni D’Souza of Padi-Valored, an NGO, said that there was a lack of trained counsellors in the State to deal with child victims of sexual assault.

He added that the police made the victims come to the station to record statements without realising the impact it would have on a child.

The programme was jointly organised by the District Legal Services Authority and Padi Valored. Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Gertrude Vegas and Member Secretary of District Legal Services Authority B. Ganesha also participated.
