February 04, 2013 02:03 pm | Updated 02:03 pm IST - Mangalore:

An 18-year-old girl hanged herself allegedly because of a prolonged narcotics withdrawal symptoms in her house at Padavinangadi on the outskirts of the city early on Sunday.

The police said, the girl, a first-year PUC student at a college in Kodialbail, hanged herself in her room sometime between 1.15 a.m. and 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, while her parents were asleep in the adjacent room.

When the addiction became pronounced, the parents withdrew her from her college and admitted her into a rehabilitation centre in Bangalore around six months ago, the father said in his statement to the Kavoor Police.

After she was released, she returned but relapsed soon. She was then confined to the house. She took prescription pills for blood pressure control to deal with the narcotic withdrawal and was admitted to a nearby private hospital after an overdose last month, said the police.

Though police said her addiction may have started in high school, they are yet to figure out the source or nature of the drugs.

Scribe attacked

A reporter from a Kannada daily was accosted by five people on Saturday night near Kundapur allegedly for his reports on the corruption scams in a local gram panchayat.

The police said, at around 8.30 p.m., Sripati Hegde (51), a reporter with Vijayavani , was accosted by Santosh Shetty, the accused, near a bar in Hemmadi. Mr. Shetty accused him of “writing lies” about the Vandse Gram Panchayat and started abusing him, said the police. A little while later, Uday Kumar Shetty and three others joined in, forcibly constrained him and threatened to kill him if he spoke of this incident, said Mr. Hedge in his complaint to the Kundapura police. He was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries. Police have made no arrests so far.

A body of a man, estimated to be aged between 35 and 40, was found in Nehru Maidan in the city on Sunday morning. According to the police, the body lay near the cricket pitches in the corner of the maidan and was covered in a blanket, seemingly “like the person was asleep”. It was only around 8.30 a.m., when one of the players lifted the blanket that the body – with slashes across the torso – was found. Mangalore South Police, who have registered a case, said though ticket stubs from Manjeshwar were found in his pockets, no identification card was found.
