Activists of the Dakshina Kannada unit of the Campus Front of India on Wednesday carried out demonstrations in support of deterrent punishment for rapists and those assaulting members of minority communities.

CFI activist Illiyas Mohammed said that incidents such as the rape of paramedical student in Delhi should not be politicised. Politicians should come forward to support the demand for deterrent punishment for rape. Expressing the need of proper investigation of rape cases, Mr. Mohammed said the police had not arrested the real persons behind the rape and murder of the 17-year-old girl in Dharmastala.

‘Exert pressure’

Mr. Mohammed said there had been many cases of rape and harassment of women. He expressed the need of a people’s movement to exert pressure on the authorities to take action against those guilty .

Members of the district unit of the Campus Front of India (CFI) and Lioness Club staged two separate protests against the Delhi rape case near the Service Bus Stand here on Wednesday.

Sukanya Kalasa, writer, said that it was necessary to issue capital punishment for heinous atrocities against women such as rape. Though the number of atrocities against women was increasing, the police seemed incapable of dealing with them, she said. Farhan Honnala, Munnavar Udupi and Ashik Muloor, leaders of Campus Front of India, William Martis and Sharada Moodusagri, social activists, were present.
