A second year commerce student drowned in the Madhwa Sarovar pond in the famous Krishna Temple/Math on Wednesday evening. Around 6 p.m., Pramod (20), a student of Poorna Prajna College, went for a bath with his friends in the pond on the premises of the math, said Udupi Town police.
He slipped on the stones and sank in the lake momentarily. The local people and friends plunged into the lake and took him to a nearby hospital. However, he died a few minutes later, said the police.
Pramod from Yellapura in Uttara Kannada stayed in Krishna Math in the city. Surprisingly, the police said they had trouble accessing the spot of the accident as the inmates of the math told them that it was considered sacred and entry was restricted.
Chain snatching
Jewellery estimated at Rs. 80,000 was snatched from a woman by two men on Udayanagar road, Suratkal, on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Suratkal police, Geeta R. Shetty got down from a city bus at NIT-K stop and was walking towards her house nearby when two men on a scooter snatched a gold necklace.
Body not identified
A body which drifted ashore on Panambur beach on Tuesday was not identified as the body of a Polish student who drowned in Malpe beach on July 5, said the Malpe Police.
An official said a team from the station that was sent to Wenlock Hospital could not draw a positive link between the badly decomposed body and Milocz Lachowski (21), a student who had come for a two-month internship to Manipal Institute of Technology.
Police now await the arrival of his parents from Poland, who are expected to land here tomorrow.
