The St. Aloysius College won the overall championship trophy in the Mangalore University Intercollegiate Swimming Competition held on Monday. Clafton and Shilpa Bengre from the College were named as the individual champions for men and women respectively.
Twenty teams participated in the competition organised jointly by the St. Agnes College and the Mangalore University’s Department of Physical Education at the Corporation Swimming Pool.
There were 39 events, including the 1,500 metres free style for men where participants had to complete 30 laps.
Inaugurating the event, Meera Aranha, general manager, Karnataka Bank, urged students to spend more time outdoors than indoors. She said sports taught a person to be a good loser and also lose honourably.
“Sadly with parental pressure children are turning out to be poor losers,” she said.

National swimmer Sanketh Bengre participated in the programme.
The team from S.D.M College of Business Management bagged the men’s team championship and the St. Philomena College Puttur was the runner-up.
The team from St. Aloysius College team bagged the women’s team championship, while St. Agnes College team was the runner-up.
