A special ward to attend to women who are victims of sexual assault was opened at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital here on Saturday.

The hospital has set apart four rooms for examination and counselling of rape victims. Five beds are available in two rooms for examination of victims. There are two other rooms will be used for counselling and taking victims’ statements by the police.

"As victims may come late at night, we have assigned rooms near the reception centre. A bigger room is also available for this purpose on the first floor of the hospital," said Shakuntala M.M, Medical Superintendent, Lady Goschen Hospital.

Apart from gynaecologists, services of three social workers and a counsellor will be available at the ward. Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Gertrude Vegas said services of social workers and counsellors will be available round the clock. "These social workers and the counsellor are already on duty," she said.

This special ward was opened by district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai.
