During the maiden visit of Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake to Surathkal on Monday, people and organisations sought modernisation of vegetable and fisheries market with basic facilities, bus stand in the suburb and parking facilities for private vehicles and autorickshaws.

Mr. Sorake promised to initiate quick action in providing integrated market complex and parking facilities. He said he would provide funds required but wanted the authorities to ensure that fisherfolk and vegetable vendors were not harassed in the name building a complex. He said proper alternative arrangements had to be made for them.

Problems roll in

People also drew attention to the problems caused to pedestrians and vehicle-users because the wagons of the RO-RO (roll-on roll-off) service of Konkan Railway were being parked very close to the road.

Surathkal legislator Mohiuddin Bava said he had promised to facilitate direct interaction between ministers and people of his constituency and the arrival of Mr. Sorake was in part fulfilment of this.
