People in select wards in the city may be able to file their property tax returns under self assessment scheme online from the 2014-15 financial year.
Similarly, they may be able to file applications for obtaining trade licences or for renewal online as the two proposals have received administrative approval.
Sources in the corporation said that N. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada who is also the administrator of Mangalore City Corporation, has given green signal to go ahead with the proposals. The proposal received the go-ahead signal in the last 10 days ago.
Property tax
The sources said that before getting the approval from the administrator, the civic body undertook a mock-trial in Bolar ward of a software developed by a private agency. As Bolar had only 1,800 properties, the details of tax returns since 2008 were uploaded to the software.
Each property owner is given a user id. Using this, the owners will be able to file their returns. The corporation is yet to zero in on the other aspects such as payment modalities. Payments through net banking, credit and debit cards are under consideration, besides allowing citizens to pay at MCC counters.
Initially, the corporation could implement its proposal only in five wards as the returns filed since 2008 would have to be uploaded, sources said. Sources said that there were 1.90 lakh properties in the jurisdiction of the corporation at the end of March, 2013.
Trade licences
Sources said that the software for filing applications online to obtain fresh and renew trade licences was ready. Here, the applicant would have to upload the documents by scanning them. They said that the corporation had issued 23,000 trade licences at the end of March, 2013. The trade licenses were issued by the health section in the civic body.
