In the hustle and bustle of Hampankatta Circle, several women and some men, most dressed in black, stood in silence for nearly two hours — a protest against the growing atrocities against women.
More than hundred women and men formed a human chain from Hampankatta signal to the entrance of University College on Wednesday holding placards that questioned the morality of the moral police, expressed concern over the worsening sex ratio, made statements about the rape not being connected to place of presence or the dress worn by women.
Calling silence as the language of protest, Madhu Bhushan from Vimochana, said movements like this started three decades ago during the Israel-Palestine conflict.
As the sun faded into the darkness, the protesters lit candles, with silence still being maintained. Befuddled commuters slowed down to read placards.
