Shiradi Ghat on Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway which has been closed for traffic for the past nearly five months for upgrading will not be opened for traffic from June.

“Gear up for this reality,” said Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim to officials at a meeting here on Friday.

Mr. Ibrahim said that with the work of concreting 13 km stretch of the Shiradi Ghat section yet to completed, buses and other vehicles bound to Bengaluru will continue to ply on the Charmadi Ghat and Sampaje Ghat. The Shiradi Ghat – the main link between costal Karnataka and the hinterland – will not be open to traffic during monsoon as assured earlier, Mr. Ibrahim said.

He said so far 50 per cent of the 13-km stretch has been completed, he said at a meeting called to review the preparedness of the district administration to face monsoon.

Later Mr. Ibrahim told reporters that the Charmadi Ghat has been well maintained and measures have been taken to strengthen the road at various points. The restriction on movement of sand lorries and other heavy vehicles on Charmadi Ghat will continue, he added.

Meanwhile, an official from the Karnataka Road Development Corporation said in the meeting that the work of widening the Mani-Sampaje road stretch has been completed. The official said the work had started in 2010.
