Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G. Parameshwar said here on Wednesday that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar should resign, dissolve the Legislative Assembly and go for elections.
He was addressing presspersons here. Commenting on the issue of Speaker K.G. Bopaiah accepting the resignation letters of legislators supporting the former Chief Minister and Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) leader B.S. Yeddyurappa, he said: “There is no point fighting to stay in the post when only two months are left (for the end of the current Legislative Assembly)”. People were facing problems because of shortage of drinking water and unemployment. The administrative machinery had failed in addressing the problems of the people. He said that it was not difficult for the Congress to bring down the BJP government. “We also know how to play politics.” The party could have resorted to engineering the government’s fall sitting in the Assembly. “But we are not going in that direction,” Mr. Parameshwar said. The party was, instead, reaching out to the people and convincing them not to bring the BJP back to power.
Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah said that the Congress would ask Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to dismiss the Jagadish Shettar government as and when more BJP legislators tendered their resignations. The party was watching the developments following the acceptance of resignations. It would wait for a few more legislators to submit their resignation letters. “Then we will ask the Governor to dismiss the government,” he said. The former Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council V.R. Sudershan said that no purpose was being served by Mr. Shettar holding on to the post to present the budget.
