Work to replace the more than four-decade-old 11.40-km-long underground sewage main pumping line (trunk line) is expected to be taken up in the city next month.

Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) would do it for the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) with loan from the Asian Development Bank.

Laying the main pumping pipeline and associated works would cost ₹ 93.55 crore. The government has awarded the work to DRS Infratech Pvt. Ltd.

Informing this at a public consultation meeting on the project at the corporation on Thursday, a KUIDFC official said that the contractor is now collecting material for launching civil works next month.

The scope of work mainly covered replacing old trunk lines in four packages. It is because they are unable to carry increased sewage load in the city, in tune with the existing population.

It included replacing 750 diameter pipeline from Kudroli (wet well number 3) to the sewage treatment plant at Kavoor with 1,100 diameter pipeline to a length of 7.65 km. The 600 diameter pipeline between Kandathapalli (wet well no 4) and Kudroli would be replaced with 950 diameter pipeline to a length of about one km.

The third package work covered replacing 225 diameter pipeline from Mulihitlu (wet well no 6) to ridge manhole near Cascia Church with 450 diameter pipeline to a length of 1.7 km. The fourth package covered replacing 450 diameter old pipeline with a new pipeline of same diameter between Jeppu Bappal (wet well 7) to ridge manhole near old sewage treatment plant at Yekkur covering a distance of 1.10 km.

The official said that all old pipelines would be replaced with Ductile Iron K9 class pipelines. Electro magnetic meters would be fixed in all wet wells to measure the quantity of sewage flow.

The entire road dug up for laying pipelines would be restored.

The other associated works included shifting of utility lines and repairing damage to them, building compound walls in case of damage and restoring house connections, if damaged.

Mayor Kavita Sanil presided over the meeting.
