The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has granted Service Quality Management Systems (SQMS) Certification Licence to the Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate.

M. Subramanyam, Mangaluru Customs Commissioner, has stated in a release the licence is for the customs headquarters at Panambur and all other formations, including docks office (including passenger terminal and container freight station), old port, Mangaluru, international airport, Mangaluru, air cargo complex, Mangaluru, customs division, and custom house, Karwar, customs preventive unit, Malpe (including customs special preventive unit, Kundapur), and customs preventive unit Kumta (including customs special preventive unit Honnavar and Bhatkal).

He claimed that Mangaluru Commissionerate is the first among its counterparts in the country to get the comprehensive licence/ certificate for the entire commissionerate involving all formations.

Mr. Subramanyam said Sevottam, an initiative of the Central Board of Excise and Customs to deliver service quality to citizens as per BIS’ SQMS standard IS 15700:2005, was launched as a certification scheme granting Sevottam symbol of excellence to public service organisations that implement a set of management system requirements. The standards require the public sector organisation to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide effective and efficient service meeting customer requirements as well as relevant legal, statutory, and regulatory requirements.

The bureau had undertaken an elaborate audit of the entire process of implementation of Sevottam, including compliance to standards, record keeping, internal audits, preventive, and corrective action taken. On being satisfied that the standards for implementation have been met, the licence has been granted for three years — up to November 13, 2020.
