Two persons died in separate accidents in the district on Wednesday.
At 9.30 a.m., Vishwas Naik (17) and his classmate Kaushik, both residents of Gutthedhar village, studying in Second PUC of Subramanya Junior College, were headed towards their college to collect their hall tickets when a speeding pick-up coming from the opposite direction crashed into them, said the Subramanya Police.
While Vishwas died on the spot, Kaushik was admitted to a private hospital in Puttur with severe injuries. Police have booked the driver of the truck Saiju. They are yet to arrest him.
Later, around 1 p.m., Bukhari (18), who was travelling on his motorcycle from his house in Kallada towards Mani, was killed when a speeding mini van rammed into him on National Highway 75 at Kalladka market.
Bukhari suffered serious injuries, and died on the way to the hospital. Bantwal Town Police said the van sped away after the accident, and no one on the road jotted down the number of the van.
Nine children sick after eating toffeesBarely weeks after seizing drug-laced toffees, nine primary school students were admitted to a hospital after they consumed toffees in their classroom in Kasaragod on Tuesday. Three persons were arrested after the incident.
The class III students of Nellikkunnu Anwar-ul Aided Upper Primary School fell sick after they ate chocolates distributed by a student to celebrate his birthday, said the police. The parent of the child, who had distributed the chocolates, lodged a complaint with the town police station.
The police raided a shop on the new bus station premises where the toffees were sold. Though samples have been sent for analysis, police officials suspect mild narcotic content in the toffee. Mohammed Ashis, Y. Mahesh, and Aboobecker, have been arrested, said the police.
Recently, the police seized drug-laced toffee packets from a shop near the old bus station premises here. The police hinted at the widespread availability of these products after the ban on paan parag and gutka products.

According to Mulki police, the woman had been in a relationship with Ashok Kumar, a friend of the woman’s brother, for nearly 10 years. Ashok Kumar had promised to marry her. A month ago Ashok Kumar sexually assaulted the woman despite her resistance. She has filed a complaint against Ashok Kumar.
MissingA 19-year-old woman from Odisha has been missing from a construction site since Tuesday. According to Barke police, Senta and her mother were among the workers staying at the site of construction in Balmatta. On Tuesday evening Senta left the place of work saying that she would bring groceries. She has not returned. Her colleague Raina Bidika has filed a complaint.
Man killedA person was killed on the spot in a motorcycle-truck collision near Kallianpur Bridge on National Highway 66 here on Wednesday.
Udupi Traffic Police said Prashanth Nayak (31), a resident of Harikhandige-Bellarpady, was riding his motorcycle from Kallianpur-Santhekatte to K.G. Road, while the truck was coming from the opposite direction from Kundapur to Mangalore, when the collision took place.
Prashanth, who suffered severe injuries, died on the spot. A case had been registered and investigations were on, the police said.
Bar vandalisedA three-member group vandalised a bar near Durga Mall after the bar owner did not cooperate in locating a person they were searching.
One of the men had a heated argument with Pradeep, a customer, who was entering the bar on Monday night. The group member returned to the bar with two other men with long sticks. They asked bar owner Suresh Hegde about the whereabouts of Pradeep. When he said he didn’t know where he was, the group broke a showcase displaying liquor and soda bottles. They left the bar after breaking a few chairs, Mr. Hegde said in a complaint.
