The Department of Commerce, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), will host a seminar on ‘Role of women in unpaid care work and its impact on growing economies’ here on Saturday.
The seminar was being sponsored by the National Commission for Women, New Delhi. Unpaid care work includes all kinds of activities centred on caring for one’s family such as children, elders, disabled members, and others. It also includes managing household activities such as cooking, cleaning, etc.
Traditionally, these kinds of work – predominantly carried out by the women of the household – have not been considered as work that requires wages. However, there a change in mindset has resulted in varying opinions.
The seminar will focus on the concept of unpaid care work being especially done by women.
It will also focus on different dimensions of the unpaid care work done by women in the growing economy and the existing gender gap in the labour market.
Poornima Baliga, pro-V-C, Health Sciences, MAHE, will inaugurate the seminar at the Interact Hall at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.
