A 17-year-old boy reportedly drowned in the waters near the beach off the National Institute of Technology – Karnataka premises on Thursday.

The Surathkal police said Rajesh had gone to the beach along with his friends Akshay, Pavan Shetty and Rahul after finishing the last paper of the II Pre University examination. Rajesh and his friends were students of Little Flower College in Kinnigoli.

While they were swimming, a huge wave reportedly took Rajesh away. Local swimmers rushed to the rescue but in vain.

By the time Rajesh was brought to the shore he had lost his life, the police said. A case has been registered.

Thefts

A series of thefts were reported in Belthangady and Puttur Rural police station limits.

Thieves reportedly broke open a kitchen window of Antharaj Jain’s house in Kasaba near Belthangady and took away gold ornaments and mobile phone cumulatively worth about Rs. 4.5 lakh. The police said thieves broke open the kitchen window around 3 a.m. when the people in the house were fast asleep. They got to know of theft only after 30 minutes of the act, the police said.

Gold ornaments worth Rs. 2 lakh were stolen from the house of A.P. Rai in Sampya in Puttur Rural police station limits on Thursday night. The police said thieves broke open the rear door of Mr. Rai’s house and made away with gold ornaments kept in a cupboard.
