Sea erosion has been reported from several places in Udupi district on Thursday and it has already claimed three coconut trees on the coastline.
T.S. Rathod, Executive Engineer, Department of Ports and Fisheries, told The Hindu that it had been reported from Tenka Yermal, Bada Yermal, Kaup lighthouse, Hoode, Udyavar-Padukere, Sasthan-Kodi, Kota-Mannur, Kundapur-Kodi, Gangolli, Trasi, Maravanthe, Shiroor-Kalihithlu and Shiroor-Dombe villages. “But the erosion is not of a severe nature so far. If the damage is severe, we will take immediate action by putting boulders to prevent it,” he said.
The Department personnel would inspect the spot of sea erosion at Shiroor-Kalihitlu on Friday and start putting boulders there, Mr. Rathod said.
Mohan Rao, Udupi Tahsildar, said that one coconut tree was on the verge of being taken away by sea waves at Padukere, while a road was in danger of being claimed by sea erosion in Udyavar. Officials in Udupi Taluk Office said that three houses belonging – Sanjeeva Poojary, Sorappa Poojary and Dhananjaya – were in the danger of being hit by sea waves in Padu village. The stone boulders kept to prevent sea waves had been taken away due to erosion in Thottam village, the officials said.
A house was damaged by lightning at Thekkatte in Kundapur taluk on Wednesday, she said.
A house belonging to Deju Poojary at Bola village was damaged and the loss was estimated at Rs. 25,000. A storm water drain was damaged at Palli village blocking the movement of heavy vehicles, said officials in Karkala taluk office.
According to the Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. in Udupi was 43 mm, while it was 68.8 mm in Kundapur and 48 mm in Karkala.
