At a time when most children of their age are busy listening to their teachers in their classrooms, several students of the Model Government Kannada School for Girls at Pendar Galli in Hubli took to the streets on Saturday for a cause.
They wanted to make an appeal to the parents of children of their age and to the children. And they did it by taking out a jatha through the residential areas and areas where some of the school “dropouts” are sent to work.
Armed with a band set, they marched through the main roads and the streets of the localities around their school. They were joined by some of their teachers.
Slogans
They raised slogans highlighting the importance of giving education to children, especially girls. They held placards which made an appeal to parents to send their children to school instead of forcing them to work at a young age.
The awareness campaign organised under the aegis of “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan” attracted many with a few even asking them what was the need for taking out the jatha.
The children explained to them that despite free education given to them, many did not get admitted to schools and some of them dropped midway for the sake of helping their poor parents.
The schoolgirls visited some houses and appealed to the people to spread the message.
