Members of the Udupi division of All India Grameen Dak Sevak Union staged a dharna in front of the Head Post Office here on Tuesday seeking the fulfilment of their various demands.

B. Vijaya Nairy, Divisional Secretary, Karnataka Circle, said the nearly 3 lakh rural postal workers worked under tough conditions in rural areas of the country.

The Union government should take immediate steps to recognise rural postal workers as government servants as recommended by the Justice Talware Committee. The Supreme Court had in its judgment dated April 22, 1977, held that extra-departmental agents (now Grameen Dak Sevaks) were holders of civil posts.

The Union government should bring the Grameen Dak Sevak wage structure and service conditions, he said.
