Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya said on Monday that the State Government was giving priority to the development of fisheries in Udupi district.
He was delivering the Independence Day message after unfurling the national flag at the 65th Independence Day celebrations organised by the district administration at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium here.
Dr. Acharya said a plan had been formulated for construction of the third stage of Malpe Fisheries Harbour and three other fisheries harbours in the district at an estimated cost of Rs. 140 crore. Construction of these harbours would give a fillip to the fisheries industry.
Priority would also be given to dredging work in the fisheries harbours in the district.
Construction of the District Offices Complex, which would bring most of the government offices under a single roof, at the End Point area in Manipal was in the final stage of completion. Construction of eight major bridges had been taken up in the district. Tourism would be developed as a major industry in the district. All efforts were being made to develop places such as Malpe beach, Maravanthe beach, and Pajaka Kshetra, birthplace of the exponent of Dwaita philosophy Madhwacharya, as major tourist centres, he said.
Underground drainage system would be constructed in Kundapur, Karkala and Manipal in the next fiscal. A sum of Rs. 2 crore had been sanctioned for widening of the main road in Karkala. An indoor stadium with modern facilities had been constructed in Udupi and was ready for inauguration, he said.
