The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday against the increase in property tax by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

B. Ramanath Rai, Bantwal MLA and DCC president, criticised the city corporation for increasing property tax by 15 per cent.

He urged the people to protest against the “misrule” of the BJP.

The former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty said although there was an opportunity to stop the imposition of the tax, the officials did not do so.

Cost factor

A release said the increase in property tax should be rolled back and that the solid waste management cess rationalised.

Door-to-door solid waste management for a shopkeeper would cost him Rs. 600 from the earlier Rs. 160, the release said.

It demanded that the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) should be modified in order to help the poor and the marginalised to build houses.

The government should take action to manage corruption and officials should not be transferred according to the whims and fancies of political representatives, said the release.
