What ails research on issues related to Kannada?
According to the researcher and Registrar of Mangalore University, K. Chinnappa Gowda, scholars have to take research seriously and make it their profession. Those who prepare theses only to acquire doctoral degrees should not call themselves researchers, he said after inaugurating a seminar on research methodologies in Kannada at University College here.
True research should become the mission of life if one were to add to existing knowledge in some measure, he said.
Research guides should apply their minds and dedicate themselves to the topic chosen. Researchers should have an idea how their research would help society. He said that the time had come to equate research in humanities with research in science, which was directly linked to society and helped people improve their life.
“At a time when Kannada is about to get classical language status, one needs to look deeper into the many aspects of the language with an open mind, giving broader framework for all things about Kannada,” he said.
The “Kannada world” should not be limited to its literature, but looked at from the social, political and economic aspects too. The State’s water, forest and other resources too could come under the ambit of Kannada research, he said.
