District Health and Family Welfare Officer Ramachandra Bairy said on Thursday that it was necessary to raise awareness among the people, including school and college students, about the ill-effects of tobacco consumption.
Inaugurating a function to mark “World No Tobacco Day” organised here by the zilla panchayat, Department of Health and Family Welfare, State Tobacco Control Unit, Archana Charitable Trust and City Hospital, Dr. Bairy said if students were made aware of the ill-effects of tobacco consumption, they would not touch it even when they grow up.
Nearly six million people died annually due to consumption of tobacco, including smoking. By 2030, the number of fatalities was expected to reach eight million. Managing Trustee of Ambalpady Temples N.B. Vijay Ballal presided over the function.
