Rains damage five houses in Udupi district

Sea erosion in Koteshwara and Tenka Yermal villages

As many as five houses were damaged due to heavy rains in Udupi district on Tuesday, while sea erosion was reported in Koteshwara and Tenka Yermal villages.

According to Kundapur Taluk Office, three houses were damaged due to rains in the taluk. A house belonging to Seetharam Achari was damaged at Uppinakudru village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 25,000.

The house of Shankar Shetty was damaged at Halnadu village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 10,000. A house belonging to Chandru Markala was damaged at Gujjady village, when a coconut tree fell on it and the loss was estimated at Rs. 15,000.

Gayatri Naik, Kundapur Tahsildar, said that sea erosion had been reported at three places in Koteshwara village. The people there were demanding that boulders be put so that sea waves could be prevented. She had sent a report to the Deputy Commissioner about it, she said.

According to the Udupi Taluk Office, the house of Gange Anand was damaged at Kadekar village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 7,510.

Abhijin B., Udupi Tahsildar, said that sea erosion had been reported at three places at Tenka Yermal village. A road belonging to Fisheries Department running close to the sea shore from Tenka Yermal too had been damaged.

He and the officers of the Department of Ports and Fisheries had inspected the spot. Stone boulders were already being put there to prevent any further damage to the road and the work is expected to be completed within a couple of a days, he said.

According to the Karkala Taluk Office, the roof of the house belonging to Chinkra Poojary was damaged at Chara village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 6,000.

RAINFALL

According to the Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Udupi city received a rainfall of 30.3 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Kundapur and Karkala towns received a rainfall of 91.4 mm and 65.2 mm, respectively.
