The south-west monsoon, which had been playing hide-and-seek since its arrival in Karnataka, appears to have gained momentum from Friday with coastal Karnataka, including Mangaluru, receiving an average 100 mm rain.
Heavy rain coupled with thunder pounded the Karnataka coast since Friday night and the onslaught continued on Saturday too kindling hopes among farmers in particular and public in general, who had been largely affected by the drought.
India Meteorological Department said that the monsoon would be very active at least for a week (weekly prediction) across coastal, interior and south interior Karnataka. IMD, Bengaluru, said that rain and thundershowers are “very likely” to occur in these places.
It said the monsoon has advanced to north Karnataka including Karwar, Gadag, Hanumakonda etc., and conditions are favourable for its further advancement to north interior Karnataka.
During the last 24 hours, Udupi received the maximum rainfall, 16 cm, followed by Kumta, 15 cm, Kota, Shirali, Manki, 13 cm each, Panambur (Mangaluru), 11 cm, Honnavar, 9 cm, Mangaluru, Ankola, 6 cm, Gerusoppa, 5 cm, Saidapur, Honakere, 4 cm, Moodabidre, Bantwal, Mani, Kadra, Raichur, Hassan, 3 cm, Karkala, Mulki, Madikeri, 2 cm and so on.
