Rahim Uchil, who has been appointed president of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, said here on Sunday that he would take people of Beary community into confidence before chalking out the activities of the academy.

He was speaking at function organised by the academy to mark three years of its existence. Mr. Uchil said that though he represented a political party, he would ensure that the activities of the academy were free from politics. He said that he would listen to the suggestions by elders before chalking out the activities. The outgoing president of the academy, M.B. Abdul Rahman, said that the academy belonged to the entire Beary community and its people should work together to promote their language and culture. Former Minister B.A. Moideen said that many people worked for the formation of the academy.

Twenty people from the community, serving in different fields, were felicitated.

They were Ismail Tannirbavi, Muhammad Sharief Katipalla and Abdul Sattar, (drama); Khalid Tannirbavi, Hameed Kannur, Sameer Mulky and Shoukat Ali (music); Hanif Puttur, Mahammadali Tannirbavi (art); Aboobakkar Baddur, Zakharia Venoor and Muhammadali Baddur (acting); Mahammed Ashraf and M. Ismail (literature); Abdul Hameed Padubidri (journalism); Ahmed Anwar (photography); Ibrahim Batisha (singing); Rukiya M Ali (social service); and Abdul Razak Anathady (writing). A book, “Beary Basel Arabian Nights” by Muhammed Kulai, was released.
