A first year Pre-University College student died when he reportedly shot himself in his farm in Karaje village near Brahmavar on Thursday morning.
According to Brahmavar police, Shreyas Shetty proceeded to his farm which is close to his house, carrying a licensed SBBL (smooth bore breech loading) gun. A few minutes later family members heard a gun shot and rushed to the farm only to find him dead. He had injury on his chest.
The police said Shreyas Shetty was the youngest of three children of Suresh Shetty, an agriculturist. Suresh Shetty had taken a licensed weapon to scare animals damaging the crop grown in the field, which is close to a forest. The police said Shreyas was studying in first year PUC in Vidyodaya College, Udupi. He was mentally disturbed and did not like being in the house. He had left the house on two occasions previously. Once he was traced in Manipal and was brought home. A complaint was filed by Shreyas’s mother Vimala, the police said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem. Ballistic experts inspected the scene of the incident, according to Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah.
20 injured as bus overturns
Meanwhile, around 20 KSRTC bus passengers were injured after the vehicle in which they were going overturned after hitting a tree in Nedigal near Dharmasthala on Thursday morning.
The Belthangady police said the KSRTC bus was going from Kadur to Dhamastala. The bus driver, Nagaraj, lost control over the vehicle and hit the roadside tree around 6 a.m. Besides Nagaraj, conductor Revanappa and 18 others were injured. Four among them with grievous injury have been taken to the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore, the police said.
