The district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code in the coastal areas of Udupi district with effect from 8 a.m. on November 21 to midnight of December 5.
An official release issued here on Tuesday stated that the prohibitory order issued by Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju carried three directions with it. Traditional fishing by gillnet and mechanised boats not registered in Karnataka was banned in 10 km area from seashore in Udupi district. The sale of fish by boats not registered in Karnataka was banned in all fisheries harbours of Udupi district. Any boat from other States which had berthed in the fisheries harbours of the district had been directed to leave with immediate effect. The catching of cuttlefish through non-traditional method had been banned.
If any of these directions were being violated, they had to be brought to the notice of the Coastal Security Police, officials of the Department of Ports, and the police department.
The prohibitory orders were being issued because of differences among local fishermen at Malpe fisheries harbour on the issues of non-traditional fishing of cuttlefish by persons from other States, fishing and sale of fish by boats from other States in the fisheries harbours of Udupi district and berthing of boats from other States.
There was a possibility these differences might lead to deterioration of law and order, hence, the prohibitory orders, the release said.
