Udupi Zilla Panchayat president Katapady Shankar Poojary said on Wednesday that the Zilla Panchayat is giving priority to solving drinking water problem in rural areas.
Mr. Poojary told presspersons here that there had been no complaint from any gram panchayat to the zilla panchayat regarding any drinking water problem so far.
This was because the gram panchayats were solving water problems at their own level.
Under the Multi-Village Drinking Water Scheme, the zilla panchayat had submitted a proposal to the Government of Rs. 45.5 crore for drinking water in areas coming under villages such as Amasebail, Machatu, Rattady, Nada, Senapura, Badakere, Hadavu, Yedthare, Shiroor, Byndoor, and Paduvari in Kundapur taluk.
Water supply
While another proposal of Rs. 53.13 crore had been submitted for providing drinking water in Tenkanidiyur, Kallianpur, Uppoor, Havanje, Brahmavar, Kaadur, Hanehalli, Heggunje, Yedthady, Barkur, Hejmady, Nadpal, Padebettu, Nandikur, Palimar, Manipur, Marne, Kurkalu, Yenagudde, Moodabettu, Kote, and Mattu. A proposal for providing drinking water for Karkala taluk had been drawn up.
Action plan
An action plan of Rs. 38.95 crore had been drawn up for 257 roadworks in the district. As many as 100 fishermen had been given financial assistance of Rs. 30 lakh for upgrading their country boats into mechanised ones.
An amount of Rs. 12.74 crore had been spent for implementing development works under the Suvarna Gramodaya Yojane in the select 52 villages of the district in 2011-12.
Toilets had been built and provided to 78,176 families in the district at a cost of Rs. 8.34 crore.
As many as 209 works had been undertaken under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the district at a cost of Rs. 2.54 crore in 2011-12. An amount of Rs. 3.26 crore had been spent for rural watershed development under the Western Ghats Development Project, Mr. Poojary said.
Zilla panchayat vice-president Jyoti S. Shetty, chairman of ZP Standing Committee on Social Justice Upendra Nayak, Chairman of ZP Standing Committee on Education and Health Babu Shetty, CEO of Zilla Panchayat S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, Deputy Secretary Pranesh Rao, and Chief Accounts Officer Thimappa were present.
