MLC Ganesh Karnik, Deputy Chairman of NRI Forum, has asked Pre-University Course teachers to withdraw the proposed “black day” demonstration to be held on Monday.

The Karnataka State Pre-University College Teachers' Association has called for the protest to press for the long-pending demand for parity in the pay scales. Karnik, who has been elected from the Teachers Constituency, told presspersons here on Saturday that holding such demonstrations on the Teachers' Day “would not send the right message”.

Mr. Karnik said the pre-university teachers were justified in demanding parity with degree college lecturers over pay. “The difference is as high as Rs. 22,000. They are justified in demanding parity and the State government is working on bridging this gap,” he said. The government was thinking of giving academic grade payment, he added. Mr. Karnik said the State government had been working for the welfare of the teachers. He said the government had been working towards bringing schools established till 1995 under the grant-in-aid scheme.
