Pourkarmikas seek fulfilment of demands

June 17, 2010 03:50 pm | Updated 03:50 pm IST - MANGALORE:

The Dakshina Kannada District Pourakarmikas and Class Four Employees Union on Wednesday demanded that 130 pourakarmikas who are working on a daily wage basis in the Mangalore City Corporation be absorbed by the corporation.

At a press conference here, president of the union Shivananda Kumar said that the corporation could fill 170 vacancies in the Health Department by absorbing these pourakarmikas. He urged the Government to compensate the families of 14 pourakarmikas who had died while in service in the past 18 years.

Vice-president of the union K. Anil Kumar urged the Government to fulfil the long-pending demand to build houses for the pourkarmikas. He said that a nine-acre plot opposite Managalajyhothi School in Vamanjoor had been identified by the MCC for providing housing facilities for 150 pourakarmikas. The proposal was pending with the Government for two years, he said.

They said that Annual Pourakarmika Day would be celebrated at the Town hall on June 19 at 4 p.m. to mark the 119th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar.
