The Postal Department has suspended a postman after he was found discarding letters at Nelyadi in Belthangady taluk. Kushalappa, with the postal department for more than 15 years, was found discarding mail by the bushes there. Villagers lodged an official complaint against him at Kalenje Post Office on Monday. Senior Superintendent of Posts (Puttur Sub-division) T.G. Naik said a preliminary enquiry established Kushalappa’s dereliction of duty which was linked to alleged alcoholism. Mr. Naik said letters pending delivery accumulated and he feared reproach from higher-ups and he dumped the letters.
Land dispute behind attack on driver
Barke police arrested six persons for their alleged involvement in the attack on Rohit Kumar, the driver of a vehicle attached to a Mangalore City Corporation official, at the busy Lady Hill Circle on July 20.
The police gave the names of accused as Shailesh (24), Vinayaka (19), Praveen (20), Puneet (27), Harish (30) and Manoj Kumar (19). The police said the accused worked for a person named Chandrahas, who has a dispute over a land with Kumar’s uncle Sitaram. The attack on Kumar looked to have been prompted by Chandrahas. “We are yet to find evidence to prove Chandrahas’s link to the attack,” said an officer involved in the investigation.
All the six have been produced before the jurisdictional magistrate court on Tuesday and later lodged in Mangalore District Prison.
Students clash
Two groups of students, belonging to different communities, clashed in Vittal Pre-University College on Tuesday. The police said around 11 a.m., Aboobakker and his friends confronted their college mate Kiran alleging he was taking pictures of Muslim girls. The resulting scuffle led to minor injuries. Two complaints were filed: one by Harish accusing Aboobakker of assault, and the other by Aboobakker accusing Harish and Kiran of the assault. Vittal Police said no one had been arrested so far.
