Students pursuing diploma courses in polytechnics staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday demanding extension of carryover system for their courses.

In a memorandum submitted at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, they said under the present system, students could go to the next class only if they cleared a certain minimum number of subjects. This created problems for students. Hence, the Government should provide for extension of the “carryover” system in polytechnics as was being done in degree colleges.

The worst affected under the present system was the future of students who had scored low marks. Hence, the Government should respond immediately to their demand, the memorandum said.

The students said that they had given a memorandum on this issue to MLA Raghupati Bhat. Though he had promised to take up the matter, no action had been forthcoming. Hence, they had been forced to stage a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. If the Government did not take immediate action on this matter, an agitation would be launched, they said.

Earlier, the students took out a procession from Tiger Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Student leaders Adnan, Pratap, Manoj, Avin, Chethan, Nikhil, Shashank, and Karthik were present.
