Chief Whip of Government in Karnataka Legislative Council Ivan DSouza inspects the progress in renovation of first block of Karnataka Government Polytechnic Hostel here on Saturday

It will be relief for 60-odd students of Karnataka (Government) Polytechnic as the first block of the renovated hostel is will start functioning from this month-end.

The absence of a hostel facility had forced students to stay in paying guest accommodation for the last two months.

The college had taken up renovation work of the hostel that was built in 1943. The government first sanctioned ₹85.9 lakh and then ₹4 lakh. As the work was not over, students had to arrange for PG accommodation since the start of the new academic year from July 3.

When Congress leader Ivan D’Souza visited the renovated block a staff member said the contractor had completed plumbing work and electrical work was under way. Some old cots were being refurbished for the use of students.

Polytechnic principal Babu Devadiga said they do not have any grants for cook and housekeeping staff for the renovated block.

“Like the earlier years, we have to arrange following admission of students. The students will have to share the cost of the cook and housekeeping staff,” he said. While agreeing with the arrangement, Mr. D’Souza said he would write to State government to sanction the funds.

Mr. D’Souza told reporters that the renovated block and the evening polytechnic will be inaugurated by month-end. He said grants would be sanctioned for renovation of the second block. All efforts will be made to bring back the glory of Karnataka Polytechnic, he said.
