Farmers from more than 20 villages in K.R. Pet taluk staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday against the pollution caused by Coromandel Sugars in Makavalli village.

The protesters, under the banner of Parisara Malinya Virodi Nagarika Vedike and Hemavathi Ulisi Janandolana’, took out a procession and staged the protest.

Raising slogans against the company and officials of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board for not checking pollution, they alleged that the factory was directly discharging hazardous waste into the river in K.R. Pet.

“We have been requesting Deputy Commissioner B.N. Krishnaiah and other officials to initiate action against the company, but nothing has been done,” Yogesh of Makavalli village told The Hindu.

Besides demanding action against the company for releasing hazardous waste into the river, farmers urged the district administration not to permit the firm to set up a distillery unit.

The protesters said they would intensify their agitation if Mr. Krishnaiah failed to address the issues soon.
