The eyes of 40-year head constable Bhaskar A.P, who died in an accident on Wednesday, may bring sight to two Udupi residents.
The transplantations were performed at a private hospital on Friday and whether the receivers have got the vision will be known after several rounds of follow up treatments over the next six to eight months.
Mr. Bhaskar and his colleague Ashwini Beeri were injured after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car near Bhagwan Mahaveer (Pumpwell) junction. Mr. Bhaskar died a few minutes after the accident. His wife Anita revealed her husband’s wish to donate organs.
Doctors at the Father Muller Charitable Hospital, who removed the corneas, did not have any persons on their list who needed an eye transplant. While checking with other eye hospitals, Prasad Netralaya in Udupi sought the two corneas. “There were two 40-year-old visually impaired persons on our list who needed the corneas and the parameters matched,” said a representative of the hospital. “We successfully transplanted cornea each to a 40-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man today (Friday).”
He, however, refused to give any further details about the recipients citing Transplantation of Human Organs Act.
