Three idols and some gold ingots created by melting five gold idols recovered
Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar said the police have still not found seven of the 15 idols that were stolen from a Guru Basadi in Moodbidri last month.
Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Mr. Kharbikar, who is leading the investigation, said they have arrested one person (Sandeep Sancheti), who was the “probable receiver” of idols from prime accused Santosh Das. “But we have so far not found the seven idols.” Asked whether these idols have been shipped out, Mr. Kharbikar said all these will be revealed in the investigation.
The police arrested Santosh Das, his wife Diptimayee Mohanty and her father Digambar Mohanty. They have recovered three idols and some gold ingots created by melting five gold idols. Mr. Kharbikar said many of thefts have been done by the prime accused single-handedly.
He was allegedly involved in eight cases of theft in the three coastal Karnataka districts.
There are cases of theft against Das in Andra Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Mr. Kharbikar said he received good cooperation from his counterparts from the four states in nabbing Das.
