The posh office of Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, inaugurated by Home Minister V.S. Acharya on Saturday, hardly suggests that it is a temporary arrangement expected to be in use for less than six months.
Refurbished in a record time of one month by a group of the city's top architects at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh, the building is furnished with fashionable furniture and smart wooden panelling. Fitted with a flat-screen television and faux leather furniture, the Commissioner's chamber is equally trendy and completes the “blue-chip corporate” look.
Even the reception desk, manned by a police constable, displays a marked departure from the dour styling seen at most government offices. “Effort has gone into giving the office a friendly look. It will not only appeal to the public but also enthuse our staff,” said Mr. Singh.
Mr. Acharya said that the permanent building for the Commissionerate, which will come up at what is presently the District Armed Reserve headquarters, would be ready by January 26, 2011. Mr. Acharya said that Rs. 3 crore had been set aside for the structure.
