The Mangaluru police have arrested Vinesh Shetty (46), an accused in a double murder case of 2003, in Mumbai.
Vinesh Shetty, a native of Shirva in Udupi, was among the seven accused arrested by Mangaluru’s Konaje police in 2003 in connection with the murder of Venugopal Nayak and his driver, Santosh, near Mudipu. In the charge-sheet, the police said that Vinesh Shetty, a sharpshooter, had been hired to shoot down Nayak and Santosh and that he has links with underworld elements.
The police had recovered the fire arm used for the murder then.
Following his release on bail in 2005, Vinesh Shetty failed to appear before the II Additional District and Sessions Court, which was hearing the case, here. On February 2, 2016, the case was transferred to the VI Additional District and Sessions Court.
After allowing a few applications filed by advocate seeking exemption of appearance for a few hearing dates, the judge issued non-bailable warrant on May 13, 2016. When Vinesh Shetty continued not to appear before court, the judge reissued the non-bailable warrant and directed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) to execute it.
On a tip-off, a team from Konaje police, led by Police Inspector Ashok, went to Mumbai and arrested Vinesh Shetty.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Shantaraju said that the police are now questioning Vinesh Shetty.
